Search clicks are shrinking. Here is how to get cited instead.

Picture this: your page still ranks number one, nothing on your site changed, and yet this month’s traffic is lower. You did not lose your ranking. Google put an AI answer above it.

The short version

  • AI answers are reducing clicks on traditional results. Three independent studies agree on the direction, even if the sizes differ.
  • Clicks are being redistributed, not erased. Being cited inside the AI answer is part of how visibility recovers.
  • You become citable by being clear, specific and easy to trust. There is no trick.

What the data says

The numbers differ by method, sample and keyword set, so read them as a direction rather than a promise.

Pew: how often people clicked a regular result

The goal is shifting from “rank number one” to “be the source the answer is built from.”

What this means for your website

  1. Informational pages feel it first. Definitions, how-tos and quick comparisons are exactly what AI answers absorb.
  2. Fewer visits, but warmer ones. People who click after reading an AI answer usually want depth, proof or a vendor. That favours pages with real expertise.
  3. Brand recall starts earlier. Being named in the answer builds familiarity before anyone reaches your site.

Seven ways to become the source

None of this is a hack. It is the groundwork that makes a site easy for people and machines to trust.

  1. Answer first, then explain. Put the direct answer in the first lines under a heading, then add nuance.
  2. Add something only you have. Original numbers, screenshots, a method you used, a real example.
  3. Make it obvious who you are. A real About page, named authors, consistent business details, and Organization schema on the homepage.
  4. Use structured data honestly. Mark up only what is visibly on the page.
  5. Keep the basics clean. Crawlable, fast on mobile, one canonical URL. Decide deliberately whether to allow AI crawlers in robots.txt, because blocking them also removes you from their answers.
  6. Earn mentions beyond your site. Industry publications, partner pages, directories and credible reviews.
  7. Measure what you can. Branded search, AI referrals in analytics, and regularly asking AI assistants your customers’ real questions.

What “answer first” looks like

An illustrative example of the structure, using a question a customer might ask.

Hard to quote

“In today’s fast-moving digital world, many businesses wonder about website migration, and there are many factors to consider before you begin…”

Easy to quote

“It depends on three things: the size of the site, how many plugins and integrations it uses, and how DNS is handled. A small brochure site is quick; a store with orders and custom plugins needs proper testing first.”

What not to do

  • Do not publish dozens of thin “AI-optimised” pages. Volume without substance gets ignored.
  • Do not stuff pages with questions and answers purely for markup. If a human would not read it, it should not be there.
  • Do not invent statistics. Readers and AI systems both punish claims that cannot be traced.

A note on the numbers

The studies above use different keyword sets, time periods and definitions, and AI features keep changing, so exact figures will move. Check the original sources before quoting them in your own work.
